Number the Stars & 75 Years Since Denmark's Liberation 2

This May Marks the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of Denmark

On April 9, 1940 after one of the shortest battles in history lasting a mere six hours, Denmark was occupied by the Nazis. They would remain under Nazi control until May 1945 when they were liberated by Allied Forces.

During the time of occupation in Denmark, as in many other occupied countries the Nazis were on the hunt for innocent Jews.

Amazingly though, about 90 percent of Danish Jews survived the Holocaust. That is significantly more than any other European country. Why?

The Danes had a fortunate advantage than that of many other countries. Danish Jews were but a mere boat trip across the sea away from Sweden and danger. As soon as it was discovered that Danish Jews would be in danger because of the occupying Nazis, the locals got to work smuggling them out of Denmark into Sweden by using cunning ingenious methods, and…fishing boats.

In this way, over 7,000 Danish Jews were brought to safety!

Number the Stars By Lois Lowry

Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is a middle grade novel that brings that long ago heroic act back to life for it’s readers to experience.

Number the Stars tells the story of a young Danish girl named Annemarie and her Jewish friend Ellen Rosen. Annemarie and her family have to help the Rosens escape occupied Denmark where Nazis are lurking around every street corner and outside every building. They must try to get the Rosens safely across the Sea to Sweden and freedom; knowing that it won’t be easy and it will certainly be dangerous.

Number the Stars is filled with action, suspense, and true friendship. It tells the amazing story of how the Danish citizens during World War Two really banded together to take care of their own no matter the cost.

I am sure that if you have read the book you will agree with me. There is so much of value to be taken from reading Number the Stars. But why stop there?

I was so fascinated by the brave heroism of the Danish people in World War Two and the charming story of Annemarie Johansen, that I have created a novel study for Number the Stars.

Number the Stars Novel Study

I personally believe that the job of novel study isn’t to test your child with comprehension questions to see if they read a book. A novel study shouldn’t suck the life out of a book or make children lose interest in it. A novel study in my mind should enrich the reading experience. It should add value to the book and not take it away.

That is what I strive for when creating my novel studies. I try to find ways to make a story more interesting, to offer a way to dig deeper into the life that the characters are living and give children a stronger connection to the books that they read.
