The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, was a very fun read.
It is the story of a charming gorilla who lives in a shopping mall, as an attraction, for all to see. The place he calls home is a glass cage.
But he does not as you might expect miss his life in the jungle.
He lives a very different life, than that of any other gorilla. He lives alone in his cage. His only friends are Stella, a kind elephant living in a cage next to his, and Bob, a dog who wanders about the mall.
Ivan keeps himself busy by talking to his friend watching T. V. and painting pictures.
This book is written in a series of poems that flow brilliantly together. It would make an excellent read-aloud for the whole family, because it is a lovable story, no matter how old or young you are.
Another thing that makes it great for a read aloud is that the poems are only a page or two long, so you can read as many or little “chapters” as you like without stopping in the middle of one.
I recommend The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate as a great silent read, or an excellent read aloud.
