Book Review| Autumn Street

“It was a long time ago.
“Though it seems, sometimes, that most things that matter happened a long time ago, that is not really true. What is true is this: bu the time you realize how much something mattered, time has passed; by the time it stops hurting enough that you can tell about it, first to yourself, and finally to someone else, more time has passed; then, when you sit down to begin the telling, you have to begin this way:
“It was a long time ago.”

Autumn Street by Lois Lowry

Autumn Street by Lois Lowry is the first book I have finished in 2019!

Autumn Street was a lovely little book. The main character, Elizabeth, who is six years old, reminds me of Ramona Quimbey. Though she is considerably better behaved than Beverly Cleary’s famous Ramona, she has some of the same mannerisms and a similar way of drawing conclusions.

Autumn Street is a very beautiful story, and worth the read. It takes place in Pennsylvania, during World War II. Elizabeth, her sister Jessica and their mother go and live with their grandfather, after their father goes off to war in the Navy.

My Thoughts About This Book….

There are some very funny parts in Autumn Street, but it also has it’s fair share of sadness. I don’t want to be a spoiler, but I think it is only fair to say that there are two instances of death in this book.

The way the author handles the mentions of the deaths, is very gentle. But, some children are very sensitive to characters dying, no matter how gently put, so you must use your discretion.

Elizabeth, and Charles, the Grandson of her Grandfather’s cook, have many adventures and mis-adventures together on Autumn street.

Autumn Street really is a very enjoyable and lovely book. I highly recommend it!
